Despite this a large number of people swear by Atkins. Others find it quite tough because carbohydrate consumption is initially restricted to around just 20 grams per day, and these should be generally be obtained from salad and other non-starchy vegetables.

You are expected to eat absolutely no fruit, bread, pasta, grains, starchy vegetables, or dairy products (other than cheese, cream, and butter). Later in the plan, carb intake can be increased by 5 grams per week which means you can have a little more vegetables, dairy food, fruits, nuts, alcohol, etc.
